"History is who we are, why we are, the way we are and where we stand"
(Quote by David McCullough, as written by
Dr. V. K. Sharma in his presidential message)
The "IADVL History Book" was released during the inaugural program of the 38 th National Conference of IADVL, Lucknow 2010.
The project directors of this book, Dr. S. Sacchidanand and Dr. Suresh Joshipura, were the past presidents of IADVL. Dr. Uday Khopkar and Dr. D. M. Thappa are the editors, and Dr. Koushik Lahiri and Dr. Rajeev Sharma are the coordinators of IADVL History textbook. From concept to compilation and to completion, it is a valiant performance.
The book in its 226 pages provides documentary evidence of origins since 1940s (as in the photograph) to its present enviable strength of nearly 6000 members. The journey started from the historic merger of Dermatological Society of India (DSI) with Indian Association of Dermatologists and Venereologists (IADV) into the present IADVL on 28th January, 1973 at Udaipur where the 1 st Annual Conference of amalgamated association was held. Twenty-eighth of January is now celebrated as IADVL day to commemorate this landmark event. The office of the new association was set up in New Delhi . Professor B.N. Banerjee (the first professor of Dermatology in India, considered as "Father of modern dermatology" in India ) was unanimously appointed as the first president of IADVL and Dr. L. K. Bhutani was made the first Honorary General Secretary of the association. The contents of the book include progressive development of the association at national as well as state level.
There is an interesting story regarding the foundation of the journal- IJDVL and textbook of IADVL.[Additional file 1]
Dr. U. B. Narayanrao published the first journal in 1935, in the name of Indian Journal of Venereal Diseases and Dermatology (IJVD) from Mumbai on personal expense and that too with a color photograph. The Journal reached the present height by the tremendous efforts of its ten editors, in particular Dr. Uday Khopkar and now Dr. D. M. Thappa. The struggle to start IADVL textbook is worth going through. The textbook project, with its three editions, is a great success due to unending and perseverant efforts of Prof. R. G. Valia, Dr. K. Sidappa, late Dr. Leslie Marquis and now Dr. Amit Valia and his team.
The first IADVL Directory was published by Dr. B. C. Kamdar, from Gujarat in 1989 and till now we have seen five editions. Dr. V. P. Kuriyipe and his team from Kerala initially created the first National IADVL website in 2001, and finally the official website www.iadvl.org was launched during mid year central council meeting at Hyderabad in 2006.
Stalwarts from Venereology also played a crucial role. In February 1947, Dr U. B. Narayanrao invited the leading Dermatologists and Venereologists of Bombay to discuss the formation of an All India Association of Dermatologists and Venereologists (IADV). The idea was whole heartedly supported by Dr. P. Natesan, Professor of Venereal diseases, Madras. The first All India Conference of Dermatologists and Venereologists was held on 27 th December 1947 in Bombay and was presided over by renowned venereologist Dr. R. V. Rajam of Madras. Later, a subcommittee to frame the rules and by-laws of IADV was appointed which included then famous and efficient venereologists like Dr. R. V. Rajam, Dr. P. N. Rangiah, and Dr. V. Govindan Nair. In the very next year on 28 th August 1948, with Dr. Rajam as its president and Dr. P. Natesan as secretary and treasurer, Madras branch was formed, being the first state branch of IADV. In June 1955, the journal (IJVD) was handed over by Dr. Narayanrao to the association and was renamed as Indian Journal of Dermatology and Venereology (IJDV). The first editors in chief were Dr. G. Panja and Dr. Chatterjee as well as Dr. Rajam to edit the Venereology aspect of the journal. Dr. Rajam and Dr. Rangiah were also among the first few venereologists who represented IADV as well as India at the international forum in 10 th International Congress of Dermatology, held in London in July 1952. In 1963, Dr. V. Govindan Nair from Kerala became the president of IADV.
Reading this fantastic book, we remember the glorious past, feel the vibrant present and look forward to an exciting future of IADVL, the largest representing society of Indian Dermatovenereoleprologists. Our present president Dr. Hema Jerajani aptly comments quoting Sir Francis Bacon, "History makes men wise; poets, witty; the mathematics, subtle; natural philosophy, deep; moral, grave; logic and rhetoric, able to contend."
Writing such a book is a herculean task. We congratulate all those who made this book a reality.
